Affectionately nicknamed “Ferg” Karen has been heavily involved in the rugby community since 1994, starting out as player at York University and Yeomen Women. She was selected to the Ontario Sr. Women’s team and played 5 seasons with this National Championship winning team. In 2004, Karen was player and Assistant Coach of the Irish Canadian Women’s program and coach of the Junior Irish Women. Noticing a shortage of referees, she got her certification and began her journey to becoming an Internationally Capped Referee. Karen represented Canada, Rugby America’s North and World Rugby on numerous occasions in both 7’s and 15’s Collegiate, National and International Matches. Notably, Karen was the first woman to referee the McCormick Cup Final and has refereed the Saskatchewan and Manitoba Men’s Provincial Finals as well. Upon retirement from the Canadian National Panel, Karen was selected to be
trained as a World Rugby Citing Commissioner and has served in that role at various Men’s & Women’s International Matches as well as several World Rugby 7’s Series Events. More recently, Karen has become certified as a World Rugby Educator and begun the task of training new referees and citing commissioners along with her duties as the Chair of Referee Committee in Ontario. She is thrilled to talk shop with teams, club officials and rugby fans about something other than refereeing for a change!
