UBC Rugby is deeply rooted in the history of British Columbia, with a legacy that dates back to 1906, the first year of post-secondary education in the province. From its early days, UBC Rugby has embraced Rugby Canada's core values of integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline, respect, sportsmanship, and teamwork, while also emphasizing leadership as a vital component of its philosophy. Our vision is to be the premier rugby development program in North America, nurturing student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. We are committed to offering diverse opportunities for student-athletes, fostering positive self-esteem, mutual respect, and a balanced life. UBC Rugby’s rich history includes iconic matches against teams like Stanford and the New Zealand Maoris, and long-standing traditions such as the annual series against the University of California at Berkeley, which is nearing its centenary. The UBC Thunderbirds are a regular competitor in the World University Rugby Invitational Tournament (WURIT) hosted every four years. While most university sports focus on inter-university competitions, UBC Rugby has maintained its emphasis on the competitive BC Provincial Club scene, recognizing that BC rugby represents the pinnacle of the sport in North America. At UBC Rugby, we are dedicated to our student-athletes pursuing their academic careers to the best of their abilities while allowing them to play rugby at the highest level.
